These
interpretive historical markers were developed and
installed by the City of Oakland Public Works Agency
and Community and Economic Development Agency. The
markers enhance the route of the Regional San
Francisco Bay Trail through Oakland. Designed and
produced under contract with
PGAdesign,
the twelve markers are installed along the 6.2 mile
long Bay Trail segment extending from West Oakland
to Embarcadero Cove.
The project received funding support from Measure
DD, the State Recreational Trails Program, the Bay Trail
project, the Coastal Conservancy, and the
Association of Bay Area Governments. It drew on the
resources of the Oakland Cultural Heritage Survey,
the History Room at the Oakland Public Library, the
Oakland Museum of California, and the Port of
Oakland.
The markers provide a rich overview of the key
historical features of the Oakland waterfront.
