Tunnel Becomes Terminal

Filling the bayJust imagine--building a tunnel under the Bay for a transit system! Long-time residents report that initially the idea was incredible. Would they really be able to do it?

Of course, they did. BART now whisks passengers back and forth in the tube between Oakland and San Francisco. You can see the soil that came out of the tunnel under the Bay at the end of 7th St. The Port of Oakland's 7th Street terminal was the last landfill project in the Bay before Terminal imagecreation of the Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC).
