Waterfront Action, Inc. is an organization formed in 2003 by the merger of
the Waterfront Coalition and the Waterfront Roundtable, two public
forums that worked to ensure community access and participation in
issues related to the Oakland-Alameda Estuary.
Founding Organizations
Oakland Waterfront Coalition - The Coalition
was founded in April of 1994 by Sandra Threlfall and a group of
colleagues in response to requests for updates on waterfront projects,
as there were at least three different agencies with waterfront
oversight. It grew into a monthly forum for discussion of waterfront
projects and improvements with an average of 20 attendees comprised of
public agency representatives, community groups, developers, landscape
architects and citizens interested in the waterfront.
Waterfront Roundtable - The Roundtable was
formed in spring of 1995 by then City Council member Nate Miley to
implement and track specific waterfront improvement projects falling
under the jurisdiction of the City of Oakland and the Port of Oakland.
Its audience was a cross section of city and port staff, regional park
representatives and community activists.
Why the Merger?
It was time to take these two groups to the next
level and form a non-profit organization that could serve an advocacy
role for the Lake and the Oakland-Alameda Estuary. We will focus on waterfront
access issues
and action.
